Is there a magic number for how often you should post on social media?

The answer depends on which social media platforms you frequent. If you’re a B2B marketer, you may spend more time on LinkedIn and want to know what is most effective for marketing on their platform. You may want to post now and then on Facebook, but because it’s not your main investment for social media marketing, you may post less than a company that uses it as their prioritized social media platform.

Let’s take a look at a few platforms and what has been found to be most effective when looking at how often you should post:

Facebook

Did you know that Facebook is the third most-visited site on the Internet? So it’s likely that no matter what kind of product or service you’re marketing, your investment there could be valuable.

If Facebook is a place your potential customers spend time, you will want to post once per day but not more than twice per day. You’re likely to see engagement drop if you post too much. Some other fun stats around Facebook:

  • Thirty-four minutes is the average amount of time a user spends on Facebook at a time.
  • More than half of the Americans that use Facebook check it multiple times per day.
  • 80% of users are scrolling on mobile, so make sure that when they click through to your site, it’s mobile-optimized as well.

Twitter

There’s a lot of freedom in posting on Twitter because you have a wide range of frequency that can be effective. Best practices show you should post 1-2 times per day, but not more frequently than 3-5 times per day. There’s also a suggested formula for the types of posts a business should include:

  • A third of your posts should be promotional
  • A third should be sharing personal stories
  • A third should be information you’re promoting by influencers or experts in your industry

LinkedIn

For LinkedIn, you have a bit of flexibility; you should post at least once per day and up to five times per day can be effective depending on your industry. LinkedIn reports that brands posting once a month gain traction at six times the rate of brands that keep a low profile on the platform. Companies that post once a week get twice the engagement.

Is more always better on LinkedIn? Not necessarily. You need to keep refining your strategy based on your metrics to see where your ideal engagement happens.

The Importance of Trial and Error

As with any marketing technique, the answer is probably always going to be a little different than what it is for other businesses. You’re likely going to need some experimentation to determine what frequency level is just right for your audience on each platform.

What’s more critical is that you invest more time in the quality of your content than in analyzing how often you should post. You should always be focused on delivering value to your audiences in the form of answering questions, solving a problem or discussing something critical and relevant to their jobs or lives.
